Almost ten years ago when I started my accounting business, I believed that small and medium-sized business owners would be happy to buy what I was offering: Bookkeeping services, payroll services, National Insurance preparation, and VAT Return Filing (when VAT eventually came into effect). Indeed most of my clients did appreciate these services, but after working with them more consistently I realized that most of them shared one problem – none of them understood it.
I know persons would say it’s my responsibility as their Accountant to teach them and help them understand, which I tried to do. But I soon recognized that their lack of understanding had less to do with me and more with the complexity of accounting itself; how hard it is for the average and even above-average business owner to understand.
It took me a while to grasp this truth. Mainly because I had my own filter of having studied Accounting for several years and couldn’t see why it’s so complicated to other business owners. But I believe it doesn’t have to be as complicated as it’s made out to be and should be much easier for business owners to understand if they so choose.
